Unemployment statistics don’t always give us a clear view of how the economy is actually doing because to be counted as unemployed, you must be without a job and actively searching for a new job. When the economy has collapsed, as it did during the Biden years, many people stop looking for jobs and are therefore not considered unemployed. And as the economy grows and improves, people start looking for jobs again. So even when there are hundreds of thousands of new jobs, there can be a ton of people who were not looking for jobs that will start looking for jobs, and that can give a temporary drive-up in unemployment numbers.
