For decades, Frontiers of Freedom has championed energy policies that prioritize affordability, dependability, and long-term stability. That mission matters deeply in Iowa, where energy is the backbone of agriculture, a key driver of manufacturing, and essential to keeping household costs under control. President Trump’s focus on unleashing American energy helped reinforce those strengths and brought greater price stability across the country.

President Trump didn’t just champion energy dominance – he delivered it. By cutting excessive regulations and encouraging domestic development, his administration made it easier to produce energy here at home. The result was greater supply, a more resilient electric grid, and lower costs for consumers. Iowa families and businesses directly benefited from policies that supported growth instead of restricting it.

But that progress is at risk. A lawsuit filed in Texas threatens to undermine that progress. In November 2024, a coalition of Republican attorneys general – including Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird – filed suit against major asset managers over their involvement in climate-related coalitions. The case claims these firms coordinated efforts to push coal companies to scale back production, potentially tightening supply and increasing energy prices.

However, this strategy may run counter to the very outcomes it seeks to protect. Senior officials, including Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, have warned that policies discouraging investment in reliable energy sources like coal could harm consumers. Their concern is straightforward: limiting supply ultimately drives up costs, and higher electricity bills hit every household and business.

Rather than shielding consumers, this lawsuit could expose them to higher prices. While it’s important to ensure that markets remain free from political interference, the shift in energy production over time has largely been driven by economics. Resources like natural gas have expanded their role because they are efficient and cost-effective – not because of coordinated pressure campaigns.

Attorney General Bird should weigh the long-term implications of continuing down this path. Energy demand is expected to climb significantly in the years ahead. In Iowa alone, projections show demand could rise by 40 to 76 percent by 2044, fueled by electrification, data center growth, electric vehicles, and industrial expansion. Meeting that need will require a balanced strategy that keeps energy reliable and affordable.

Moving forward with this lawsuit risks pulling Iowa in the wrong direction. State leaders should reconsider whether this effort truly supports consumers and economic growth—or whether it inadvertently weakens the energy security and affordability that President Trump’s policies helped achieve.

Frontiers of Freedom urges Attorney General Brenna Bird to defend a pro-growth energy strategy that keeps power reliable and costs low for Iowans and all Americans.
